How to Fix Instagram Camera Not Working

The entirety of Instagram is based on content obviously captured with a camera, so now, when you find yourself in such an ironic situation where you are using the app, and its camera is not working, it could be really frustrating.

If you are observant, you would have noticed that when you install the Instagram app for the first time, it would ask for permission and access to use your camera. This is because of the way the app was designed, it needs access to your device’s camera to carry out a lot of its functions.

How to Fix Instagram Camera Not Working

Instagram without a functional camera is basically dormant and useless for a creator. As a content consumer, you could manage and get by without a working camera, even though there would be functionalities you would be deprived of access to. But as a creator, it is absolutely impossible to do anything if your camera is down.

There are times I have experienced this, and I tell you, it is not a funny experience. You would be deprived of access to make video calls, stories, Instagram Live, and you would not be able to use filters.

I am sure the list could actually go on and on, but you get my point. Imagine fixing a particular time with your followers to go live, only for your camera to act up.

The height of frustration, I tell you. The thing is, camera issues within the Instagram app come in different forms. You could have access to the camera function on other facilities, and you would not be able to make video calls.

You could also have access to just one camera facility, and for whatever reason, you would just find it impossible to access others. But if the app cannot connect to your device’s camera at all, the app would still work fine, and you just would not be able to carry out any functions that need your camera.

Now the main question is, how do you fix your Instagram camera not working? There are a couple of ways you could troubleshoot this problem, and I would go through them now.

  • The first thing you need to do is check your chosen permissions. Before you start to rampage and get upset with Instagram- trust me, I have been there- you should really check if you gave Instagram permission to access your camera. If you did not give permission, Instagram would not be able to use your camera. There is also a possibility that you had given permission in the past, but due to some update in your firmware, the permission was revoked for security measures. This is very likely if, normally, your permissions are auto-enabled on your device. To be sure whether or not this is what is happening, it is advisable to check the active permissions in the Instagram application.

You can check by the following these steps:

  1. Open Settings on your device
  2. Then click on Applications.
  3. Click on the Instagram app.
  4. Then open Permissions.
  5. It would be best if you made sure that the permissions for the camera are on.
  6. If this was the problem, you should be able to use your camera within the app now.
  • If you still cannot use your camera in the app, then you could try clearing the app’s cache and data. Instagram is an ever-evolving app. There is something new that is added almost every day just to make it more fun. This in itself is not a bad thing; who does not want more filters or fonts, yay! But when it comes to functionality, these frequent updates and tinkering could lead to the accumulation of unnecessary data. It is definitely helpful to clear your cache and unneeded data when you can. If you do not, it could lead to some of your things acting up, just like your camera.

To clean your apps cache or data

  1. Go to Settings on your device.
  2. Open Apps.
  3. Click on Instagram.
  4. Open your storage.
  5. Then click on Clear Cache and Data.
  6. Afterward, you would need to restart your device.
  7. Then try to open your Instagram.
  8. You might need to log into your account again.
  9. Try using the camera by swiping left.
  10. If the problem has been solved, your camera should start functioning immediately.
  • What if, after following these steps, you still cannot access your camera? Fret not, because there are still other solutions you can try. It would be best if you attempted to update the application. With the serial way Instagram releases new updates, it is advisable you ensure your app is up to date. There is a possibility that one of these updates would fix the camera glitch because what use is all the cool features they provide if they cannot get the camera to work.

How to Update your App

To update your app on an android device.

  1. Launch the Google Play application
  2. Then go to the options toolbar located at the top left corner of your screen.
  3. Then click on the second option called “apps and games.”
  4. It would automatically list all the apps that need to be updated on your phone.
  5. Scroll through the list to check if your Instagram app is on the list
  6. If it is there, click on “Update” to begin the update process.

  6. The app will start updating, and once it is done, you can launch your app to check if the camera glitch has been fixed.

If the glitch has still not been fixed, there are other solutions you could still explore.

  • You could reinstall the Instagram app. It might not really seem like a feasible idea, but it could definitely help. Sometimes due to an update in your OS, there would be apps on your phone that could start to act up, and these strange behaviors would only be solved if you uninstall the app and download a new one.

How to reinstall the Instagram app

On Android;

  1. Click and hold down the Instagram app in your app list.
  2. Choose the “Uninstall app.”
  3. Restart your device.

  2. Choose the “Uninstall app.”
  3. Restart your device.
  4. Open the App Store.
  5. Search for Instagram.
  6. Install the app.
  7. Then try to use the camera.

If your camera still does not work, you have to start considering the possibility that the problem is not from the app; rather, it is coming from your device. And if this is the case, there are a couple of solutions you could still try to solve the problem.

  • You could try to update the firmware of your device. There might have been a glitch in the last system update that was carried out on your Operating System. This glitch could have affected the way your camera functions in some apps, thus affecting your Instagram. So it would be best if you were on the lookout for any new system update. Most companies would fix a glitch of this magnitude as quickly as possible to avoid complaints from their clients.
  • You must ensure you are using a native camera app. A native camera app basically means the camera application that came with your phone. The reason why this is encouraged is that third-party applications usually have problems merging and functioning appropriately with other apps. So to avoid problems like this, make sure you use your native camera app. To confirm if you are currently using a native camera app or to change to one, you have to;
  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Then go to Apps.
  3. In Apps, click on Settings.
  4. Open the Default Apps settings.
  5. Click on Camera.
  6. Make sure that your native camera is chosen as the default.
  7. If this was the underlying problem, everything should work fine now.

But if the issue is still persistent, there are only two other things you can try to solve your problem.

  • You could wipe the cache partition data. The fact is there is a very strong possibility that your camera actually has a problem, or it could even be system integration issues. A lot of users who have experienced camera-related issues have been able to get everything back to normal by wiping the cache partition data of their device. This process will not affect your data, so you can be assured that all your multimedia, apps, and setting are safe. You might have to Google the procedure for doing it, though, because sometimes the procedure is device-specific.

How to run the recovery procedure

  1. You must make sure your device battery is at least 20 percent.
  2. Ensure you turn off the device.
  3. You have to press and hold the combination of the volume up, home, and power Keys.
  4. Then you would wait until the Android System Recovery screen appears to release all the keys.
  5. You need to use the Volume Down key to go to the “Wipe cache partition.”
  6. Click on the”Wipe cache partition” using the Power button.
  7. Then Use the Volume Down key to highlight ‘Yes.’
  8. Press the Power button to confirm.
  9. Once you are done with the procedure, confirm the ‘Reboot system now’ using the Power button.
  10. You can then launch the Instagram app to confirm if the camera is now fully functional.
  • The final option you could try to solve your camera issues is to reset your device to factory settings. This has to be the last resort because this is a permanent process. You should only attempt to do this if really nothing else worked. Ensure you back up all your data you do not want to lose. And you have to mentally prepare yourself that you would lose all your preferred settings because everything would be back to the default setting.

How to reset your device to factory settings

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Open Backup and Restore.
  3. Then choose Factory Data Reset.
  4. Click on Reset Device.
  5. Choose Erase Everything.
  6. Confirm your selection and type in your passcode or PIN.
  7. This process should take about five to ten minutes.
  8. You should reboot your device.
  9. You would have to log into your account again.
  10. Then check your camera to confirm if it is working.

Hopefully, one of all these steps would solve your camera issues, and you would be able to continue using your Instagram comfortably.

How to post your story to Instagram

Instagram stories are one of the most popular functions on Instagram that require a working camera for the user to use it. If you want to post a story, here is how to do it;

  • If you want to post anything to your story, you would have to click on the camera icon or swipe the whole screen to the right.
  • This action will open Instagram’s camera.
  • Stories have four different modes; normal, boomerang, hands-free, and Live, and you would have to choose one of those modes.
  • To use the normal mode to take a picture, just tap on the circle button, but you would need to hold the button down if you want to take a video.
  • Boomerang takes a series of photos and combines them into a video that is played both forward and backward.
  • Hands-free mode allows you to record videos without having to hold the circle button down. You just tap it to start recording and tap it again to stop recording.
  • Live mode allows you to broadcast videos live directly to your audience, but once you are done with the broadcast, the video is deleted.
  • And if you do not want to use Instagram’s camera to make your post, you can always swipe up to use pictures or videos that are already on your phone.
  • You can add text, scribbles, or stickers to your post by clicking the top right button.
  • When you are done, and you want to post your story, you can either click the “Your Story” button or that the arrow, choose Your Story, and click send.

What if it is just my Instagram video call that is not working

If your issue is functionality specific, which means if it is less of the camera and you not being able to use a function such as a video call, you might need to reassess some of the settings you have chosen.

  • First, you need to be sure you are following the person, and the person is also following you. The way Instagram is set up, you cannot put a video call across to someone you are not following. There is also a possibility that you would not be able to put a call across if you are following them, but they are not following you. If you do not follow a particular person, but you have accepted a direct message from them previously, they could still put a video call across to you.

There are other settings you must put in place to allow your video call to take place successfully.

  • You need to enable push notifications for video chat from everyone. To do this ;
  1. Go to your profile
  2. Click on the 3-line menu icon.
  3. Then click on Settings.
  4. Click on push notifications, and scroll down to the bottom.
  5. In the Video Chats section, choose From Everyone option.
  • You would also need to check if you had muted the particular account you cannot video call. This could have been done by mistake or whatever reason. But if you want to be able to video call the person, you must unmute the video chat.

To unmute your video chat;

  1. Click on the direct message icon from the Instagram Home screen.
  2. Choose a group or a particular person you have not been able to video call.
  3. Click the group name or person’s account name at the top of your screen.
  4. Ensure that the mute video chat option is not enabled.

You should be able to comfortably make video calls once you have followed all these steps.
