Posting videos and photos to Instagram is a fun thing to do especially when one wants to share a fond memory or momentous occasion with friends and family.
But what happens when trying to upload photos and videos one encounters a problem, it then becomes stressful and sometimes frustrating leading to one getting discouraged.
The problems vary from one person to another, various issues can arise while uploading content to Instagram such as cropped photos and videos, incomplete uploading of content, etc. what can I do when I try posting a photo or video and it gets cropped?
Video Quality, Resolution, and Dimensions
With the improvement and advancement in technology over the years since the inception of Instagram, various video formats, sizes, shapes, and specifications have emerged were by we have video formats such as mp4, HDV, WEB, etc. all with different video dimensions such as 720, 1080, etc.
So it is expected that not all video types and sizes will be compatible and acceptable on Instagram which can therefore lead to issues such as Instagram downgrading and compressing a video to fit its acceptable dimensions this, in turn, reduces video quality and sometimes parts of the video are cropped out.
In uploading or posting of video content to Instagram it can come from different sources ranging from tik tok videos to Twitter etc.
lengths of videos vary so also their qualities which in effect affect whether a video would be compressed, cropped, or incompletely uploaded by Instagram.
At the inception of Instagram, the acceptable aspect ratio was 1:1 meaning that for one pixel wide there is one pixel tall.
This meant that for you to upload any video content you had to make it conform to this aspect ratio thereby video quality was affected because videos that did not meet this were compressed or downgraded.
But with the advent of technology, Instagram had to increase the acceptable dimensions, size, and format of videos seeing that lots of issues arose in the quality of contents being posted to the social network.
Photo Quality, Resolution, and Dimensions
At the inception of Instagram, there was only one particular shape and size of the photo acceptable. Concerning picture capturing we know that the advancement in technology it has led to improved cameras both those of iPhones and Android phones.
These phones all have different picture resolutions, sizes, dimensions, pixel size, and ways in which the pictures could be taken.
Some pictures are taken with professional cameras which the resolution and picture quality is very high so for this to be reduced to the quality Instagram can accept it means the picture had to be downgraded and in this way, the picture quality is reduced.
Looking at all these scenarios it became imperative for Instagram to have a minimum acceptable picture quality, size, dimension, and aspect ratio, etc.
for the pictures that would be uploaded onto the app. knowing that we have phones with varying degrees of pixels ranging from three pixels, eight pixels, thirteen pixels, etc. there would be different picture quality and output from phones.
Also taking into consideration that manufacturers of these phones have different setups and approaches to improving their phones by implication this means that all phones are continuously being improved upon meaning that there are continuous increases and changes in picture resolutions and quality over time.
In taking photos and recording videos we have different photo and video orientations that can be used, these affect the quality of pictures that would be posted to Instagram because there are varying orientations, aspect ratios than that which is deemed acceptable on the Instagram app.
We have several photo orientations such as portrait and landscape, there are also different aspect ratios for example 1:1, 4:3, 4:16, etc. aspect ratio is the proportional width and length of your video or photos.
Types of Photo Orientation
Photo orientation is the way in which a picture is oriented for normal viewing. There are about two commonly known types of orientation namely portrait and landscape.
In portrait orientation, the main features that are captured in the picture include the face and upper body of the object or person in question.
Here the focus is more on the object or objects in the picture frame than on the details in the environment.
In landscape orientation more details are captured, most mobile phones make use of the portrait orientation whereby the height of focus area is greater than the width or wide the area is, but with the improvement in technology newer phones being made come with the flexibility option of allowing the mobile phone user to choose what type of orientation they desire.
So in landscape orientation, the environmental details or the surroundings and space around an object are better involved and alighted.
this orientation is useful for portraying and viewing wider areas or frames with multiple elements or objects that need to be observed at the same time i.e. captures more details and objects, environment of object, etc.
pictures in this orientation are horizontally inclined and as the name of the “Landscape” orientation; implies it is mainly focused on the scene or environment and is majorly utilized when trying to take pictures of the outdoors in a way that one’s attention is drawn into the scene around an object or one devoid of an object.
So when using this orientation the camera is focused on capturing more of the scenery so the photo frame would not be filled with a subject i.e. the subject or object is not the main receptor of lighting but rather the photo is lighted evenly all round.
This orientation is useful for recording and capturing outdoor activities such as mountain climbing, skiing, etc. where the scenery is as much a focus as the activities itself.
Majority of video recordings are done using this orientation because more details or objects can be included.
This orientation is focused mainly on bringing to the fore an object’s appearance and features rather than the scenery behind the object or the environment in which the object is in for example in using this type of orientation in taking a person’s picture you will notice that within the photo frame the person’s profile is alighted more than the ensuing background and the profile is bright and well lit.
This picture frame is vertically inclined, here the emphasis is on the object details which are made to stand out so the picture frame is filled as much as possible. This orientation is best suited for use in emphasis on a single person or object.
Posting videos and photos without cropping
The most common and generally accepted video format is the mp4 format with dimensions of 1080 pixels by 920 pixels.
Instagram has several components such as Instagram television, Instagram stories, Instagram live videos and Instagram feeds videos.
All these have varying specifications and requirements such as dimensions, aspect ratio, and format for the videos uploaded on them.
For Instagram TV, Instagram Stories, and Instagram live videos the best aspect ratio for posting here is 9:16, this is the standardized size of most mobile smartphones in use today with dimensions of 1080 pixels by 1920 pixels.
Instagram feeds the acceptable aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 4:5 with dimensions between 1080 by 608 pixels and 1080 by 1350 pixels so any video that has an aspect ratio between these two values is acceptable on Instagram i.e. you can share a video with 4 : 3 aspect ratio and 1080 pixels by 720 pixels this is still within the acceptable limit of resolution.

Photo and Video Aspect ratio, Dimensions and Resolution for Instagram
At the inception of Instagram the only available aspect ratio was the 1:1 which was referred to as the square, but the improvements in technology and phone capabilities which has meant that there has been increasing in photo and video resolutions which were now better than the acceptable quality of videos on Instagram it meant there had to be a change in the acceptable dimensions, resolutions, orientations and aspect ratio on the social network. There are three aspect ratios for Instagram namely: portrait, landscape, and square.
The aspect ratio for photo:
Portrait is 4:5
Landscape is 1.91:1
Square is 1:1
The aspect ratio for videos:
Portrait is 4:5
Landscape is 16:9
Square is 1:1
Square is 1080 pixel by 1080 pixel
The portrait is 1080 pixel by 1350 pixel
The landscape is 1080 pixel by 608 pixels
Minimum video resolutions accepted
Square is 600 by 600
The portrait is 600 by 750
The landscape is 600 by 315
Maximum video resolutions accepted
Square is 1080 by 1080
The portrait is 1080 by 1350
The landscape is 1080 by 608
So a video can be posted within these resolutions and it will be uploaded without cropping or cutting out but also bearing in mind the length of the video. On Instagram, the maximum size of file that can be uploaded and posted is four gigabytes and should be within thirty frames per second and nothing more.
What is the length of Instagram videos?
Instagram video length varies for the different components such as the length of video content for Instagram live or Instagram stories would not be the same so also the length of videos for Instagram television one would not expect it to be the same length as that of stories or Instagram feeds.
The minimum length for videos posted to Instagram feed is three seconds while the maximum length is one minute or sixty seconds.
For Instagram stories, the maximum length of video for each story is fifteen seconds so for example, if you have a story that is forty-five seconds in length Instagram would divide it into three parts so also for a sixty-second video.
For Instagram television, the maximum length of videos posted here is ten minutes while the minimum length of the video is fifteen seconds.
For Instagram live the video content can reach up to a length of an hour. So they serve different purposes for users, Instagram live can be used to have seminars or teach.
