Apart from posting your pictures and videos and checking out your clique’s posts, there is so much more to Instagram. It is social media, which in the most basic form, means it was created to help people socialize as much as possible.
When I use Instagram, I am able to make the most of it because I can easily search for any user I want by their name, location, and hashtag. It is an effortless and smooth experience, which really helps to bring Instagrammers together.
The art of finding people that share the same interests as you is really the joy of social media. I love writing, and it is completely wholesome when I am able to feel like I am part of a community.
I get to share my work with fellow writers and also gain knowledge and inspiration from them. All these are a result of being able to search for any user I want at any time I want.
So, you need to know how to search Instagram users by name, location, and hashtags?
I would assume you already have the mobile application or the website version. Either way, once you are inside the Instagram application, you would have to click on an icon that resembles a magnifying glass, which will bring up a search bar at the top of the screen. The search bar is where all the fun happens.
There is one thing to note though, on the Instagram website, you cannot search specifically for names or tags.
As an example, if you type “Cindy” into the search bar on the Instagram website, you would not only get the top accounts under the name “Cindy,” but you would also get the hashtag “#Cindy” in your results as well.
However, there is actually an easy solution to this problem. If you are searching for an account, add a “@” symbol to display profiles only. And if you are looking for a specific hashtag, add a “#” symbol before your search.
Now, on the mobile application, you can search for any Instagram account of your choice using the Instagram search bar. When you click on it, you would be able to see four different options you can choose from right below the search bar at the top of your screen: top, accounts, tags, and places.
You can actually search for anything you want in the Instagram search bar, but you have to keep in mind that your results will be generated based on what you looked up in your search bar.
So, if you take a word like “charcuterie” and you look it up in the search bar when you click on Top and type “Charcuterie,” you will be provided with Instagram users with “charcuterie” in their usernames, locations, and viral charcuterie hashtags.
But if you click on Accounts, you will only see Instagram users with the word “Charcuterie” in their usernames, while if you click on Tags, you would only see prevalent and popular charcuterie tags. If you click on places, you would see geolocations of places based on accounts that offer charcuterie.
Knowing the Why, When, and How To Use Each Search Method
How To Search Instagram Users by Name
- First and foremost, you would have to open the app on your device.
- Once you have launched the app, you will have to either sign up or log in, and that would depend on whether you already have an account or not.
- Once you are logged in, you will see the home page, but that is not our goal.
- Look at the lowest part of the home page and click on the magnifying glass; it is the second icon at the bottom of the screen.
- That would lead you to a new page with a search bar at the top of the screen.
- Click on the Account tab; it will limit your search to only account names on Instagram.
- Type in a name or account name, and as you are typing, results would appear below the search bar.
It is worthy of note that whenever you start typing the name of the account you want to search for, the system will automatically offer you possible matching accounts, so you can stop typing and check if the one you are looking for is there on the suggested list.
The fact is the number of such accounts can be really quite long, so you might have to use the scroll button to see all of them.
So you can choose the actual account you have interest in and click on it. You can decide to follow the account straight away or go through the account’s content if it is not a private account to decide if it is truly appealing to you, but that choice is ultimately left to you.
Despite all these steps, there is actually a possibility you might not find the account you are looking for, maybe because you are missing the correct spelling of the username or you do not even know the username in its entirety, and that is why you can further search Instagram users by location and hashtags.
2. How to Search Instagram Users By Location
Another amazing way to search and find out Instagram accounts is by using Instagram locations.
The location function on Instagram comes very handily when you do not know the exact name of a user on Instagram, but you are very sure of the locations they frequent, or at least a location you are aware they have been.
The only downside to this is that you can only search the locations of users’ pictures on Instagram if they have stated their location or tagged their photos with location hashtags.
To search for location hashtags, assume you are searching for any other basic word, but make sure you are under the location section.
Instagram does not require you to have to put on your GPS to see other people’s locations. You just have to click the location that is being shown at the top of the photo the user has posted, and you will be directed to the exact location of the photo. You can also search users’ locations from the Instagram app by using the search bar to check out the exact location to see who else has also been to the same place.
Using this method, you can stumble on more Instagram users with similar interests as yours. But to do this, Instagram will have to require you to turn on your GPS to help you find the location you are looking for.
Once you use this method, you will get to see both top and recent posts made by other users who have also been to that location. There is a small map just above the tagged photos that you can click. You can open the map using Google Maps.
Hashtags are really fun and useful tools. They help people keep ahead of trending topics and provide a community for people with similar interests.
You can tag that fun cooking video with a popular hashtag under cooking or baking. Anyone really interested in the cooking community would be able to also find your video and watch, like, or even comment without necessarily having to follow you by giving you more reach. But our hashtags’ awesomeness does not end there.
You can also search Instagram users by hashtags by either;
- Going to the Instagram search bar and typing the keyword you think would be associated with that account.
- Or selecting a hashtag you found in a comment section or image caption that pertains to the account you have in mind.
The wholesome thing about the first choice is that it gives you the opportunity to discover a myriad of other hashtags relevant to your searches. You might even find something preferable to what you were searching for in the first place.
Another way to find a post or an account that you feel would be associated with a hashtag is to use the option called ‘Tags.’ It is also available under the search bar, and it works in a similar way.
One thing to note is that it is vital to remember that while entering your hashtag, you must always put the “#” sign before it. That is the standard look of a hashtag on all social media platforms, and Instagram also uses the same format.
This means if you want to search for “food” as a hashtag, it must be written as “#food” and not just plain old “food.” This is when the search would consider it a tag and bring out all posts that have been given the “#food” tag.
There is one more thing you must not forget; only an account that has associated itself with a hashtag can be found by it. Hashtags behave like identity cards.
A user has to intentionally and strategically add them to his or her posts in order for it to be able to come up when a search for that tag is done. If the particular tag is missing from the users’ account, even though the entire person’s content focuses majorly on the said tag, it still might not come up at all.
To search for a hashtag, you would have to;
- Tap the search bar in your Instagram application
- Select the ‘Tags’ option provided under the bar
- And enter the hashtag of choice with a “#” sign.
You would get to find a lot of accounts that have been associated with the hashtag you searched for. This way, you can just scroll through and pick out the account you actually had in mind.
There are various reasons you would want to add to the number of people you are already following on Instagram.
Whatever reason that is, searching using names, locations or tags is definitely the right way to go. And from the article, you can already see the process is really stress-free.
How to Search a User on Instagram Without Having An Account
Yeah, this situation could definitely happen. You could want to search for someone on Instagram without actually using the platform yourself.
Maybe it is to check out what your old friend you lost contact with has been up to on the gram or even to spy on extremely cute pictures of your new crush. B
ut whatever reason you might have, you do not need to be bothered if you want to search for an Instagram account, but you do not have an account yourself. It is actually very easy to use Instagram’s search tool without necessarily having an account.
In fact, there are two methods you could use to carry out your search.
The first method is done by just using a very easy and straightforward Google search.
To do it, you would have to;
- Open your browser.
- Go to the website “google.com.”
- Then type“site:instagram.com.” into the search bar.
- You can then add whatever name or word you are searching for after that.
- Then you press Search.
If you want to use the second method, you would need more information about the account you are searching for, such as their username.
The trick is to use the search feature by going on Instagram’s website to find a specific person. Then, instead of you using Google, you would just type in “instagram.com/cindy” and continue your search from there.
How to Clear Your Instagram Search History
Normally, while using the Instagram application, anything you search for is actually kept private, and other users are not notified or allowed access to your search history.
But then, even though your searches may be treated as private information, a record of every single thing you searched for is still kept inside the application.
Now, maybe while you were going through those gut-wrenching phases of a breakup, you had been spying on your ex, but now you are completely over him, and you do not even want to see his name in your search history, or maybe you used to be a major fan of a band or celebrity and now you just do not feel them like you used to, and you want to rid yourself of their names littering your search history.
Fret not, because the process is actually very easy and totally doable.
Here is how to clear your search history on Instagram:
- You have to go to your profile.
- Then press the three-lined button at the top-right corner of the page.
- Then you go to Settings.
- Then click on Security.
- Then select Clear Search History.
- Tap the Clear All button at the top-right corner of the page.
- Press Clear All again.
Once you follow all these steps in detail, you would clear all of your search histories, and you will not be able to undo them.
However, you might still be able to see some of the accounts you have searched for come up as suggested accounts to follow. You can also decide to go through your list of searches and delete them individually; in any case, you do not want to clear everything.
Your recent searches would also come up on the Search page before you even type anything in at all. They can also be cleared individually by pressing the “X” button to the right, or you can press “See All” to be taken to the Clear Search History page.
Earlier in the article, we have gone over how to use hashtags, and we have stated the usefulness and their incredible awesomeness. But what if you wanted to search for more than one hashtag at once? Is that even possible?
Because we all know searching for specific hashtags is a really straightforward way to find new content and accounts to follow. But at times, even one hashtag does not seem enough to fully cater to the topic you are searching for, and you might need multiple hashtags.
Unfortunately, as of this writing, Instagram does not allow anyone to search by using multiple hashtags. Even if you write them separately, it will still search for it as one hashtag. The only way to use multiple hashtags is by doing multiple searches for each tag.
How can you find an account on Instagram that has had its username changed?
You can find any Instagram account even if they have changed their username, as long as you know their actual real name. Instagram is designed to display your username, but it also knows your real name.
So if you search for someone’s real name instead of just the username, then you would also land on the same profile.
If an account has been set to private and you try to find the account with a hashtag, you might not see the account even if the hashtag has been added to a post on the account because the post will not appear publicly on the corresponding hashtag page. You will only get to see it if you are currently following the said account.
